Japanese Polite Negative (ません): Formal Negation

Learn the polite negative form (ません) for formal situations. Essential for business Japanese and polite conversation.

The polite negative form (ません - masen) combines politeness with negation. Use this form when speaking formally or to people you're not close with.

How to Form Polite Negative(ません形の作り方)

Simply replace ます with ません:

If you know the polite form, just swap ます for ません!

When to Use(使い方)

Use polite negative in:

  • Formal situations: Work, interviews, service
  • Declining politely: すみません、分かりません
  • Questions: 行きませんか？(Won't you go?)
申し訳ありませんが、その日は行けません。
もうしわけありませんが、そのひはいけません。
moushiwake arimasen ga, sono hi wa ikemasen.
I'm sorry, but I can't go that day.

Adjective Polite Negative(形容詞の丁寧否定)

For adjectives:
