The negative form (ない形 - nai-kei) is how you say "don't" or "not" in Japanese. It's essential for everyday conversation and forms the basis for many other grammar patterns.

How to Form the Negative(ない形の作り方)

The formation depends on verb type:

Godan	Change う→あ + ない	書く → 書かない
Ichidan	Drop る + ない	食べる → 食べない
する	→ しない	する → しない
くる	→ こない	くる → こない
ある	→ ない	ある → ない (irregular!)

For godan verbs ending in う (like 買う), the あ-sound becomes わ: 買う → 買わない (not 買あない)

Godan Verb Negative(五段動詞の否定形)

Change the final う-sound to the corresponding あ-sound, then add ない:

The ある Exception(「ある」の特殊性)

The verb ある (to exist) has an irregular negative:

Adjective Negatives(形容詞の否定形)
