How to Form the Desire Form(たい形の作り方)

Take the polite stem (the part before ます) and add たい:

たい conjugates like an い-adjective:

Important Limitations(注意点)

たい is only for the speaker's desires:

  • ✓ 私は食べたい (I want to eat)
  • ✗ 彼は食べたい (He wants to eat) - incorrect
  • ✓ 彼は食べたがっている (He wants to eat) - correct
!

For third person desires, use たがっている or ほしがっている instead.

With たい, the object can take を or が:

  • 水を飲みたい (want to drink water)
  • 水が飲みたい (want to drink water - emphasizes desire)
